Overview

Perinatal genetics helps families understand the chance of genetic conditions in their baby and the testing options available, so they can make informed choices.

Who it may help

  • Couples who are related by blood
  • Families with a history of thalassaemia or other inherited conditions
  • Pregnancies with abnormal screening or scan results
  • Couples with previous pregnancy loss or an affected child

What the service includes

Genetic counselling, carrier testing such as thalassaemia screening, prenatal screening and diagnostic tests such as chorionic villus sampling or amniocentesis.

What to expect

Counsellors explain the options, benefits and limits of tests without pressure. Decisions remain with the family.

At KIH

KIH's obstetrics team can provide screening and arrange genetic counselling and specialised testing when needed.
