Overview

Phototherapy exposes the skin to specific wavelengths of ultraviolet light under medical supervision. It can calm inflammation and help restore skin colour.

Who it may help

  • People with psoriasis
  • People with vitiligo
  • People with eczema that does not respond to creams
  • People with some other chronic skin conditions

What to expect

Treatment is given two to three times a week for several weeks. Each session lasts a few minutes, and the dose is gradually increased.

Risks

Risks include sunburn-like redness, dryness, itching, pigment changes and a long-term increase in skin cancer risk.

At KIH

Our team can guide you to a skin specialist for phototherapy. Newborn babies with jaundice may receive a different type of phototherapy in KIH's neonatal unit.
