Overview
The pleura is the thin lining between the lungs and chest wall. Fluid, air, infection or tumours in this space can cause breathlessness and chest pain.

- People with infection in the pleural space (empyema)
- People with pleural thickening or tumours
Treatment options
Options include ultrasound-guided drainage, chest drains, pleural biopsy, thoracoscopy, pleurodesis and long-term drainage catheters.
What to expect
Tests include chest X-ray, ultrasound, CT and analysis of pleural fluid. Treatment depends on the cause.
