Overview

Psychotherapy involves regular sessions with a trained therapist to explore thoughts, feelings and behaviours. It is effective for many mental health conditions and is often combined with medicines.

Who it may help

  • People with depression or anxiety
  • People with panic attacks, phobias or OCD
  • People coping with trauma, grief or relationship problems
  • People with stress, low self-esteem or anger difficulties

Types of therapy

Common approaches include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy, psychodynamic therapy and supportive counselling. The therapist chooses the approach with you based on your needs.

What to expect

The first session focuses on understanding your concerns and goals. Sessions usually last about 45 to 60 minutes, often weekly. Progress is reviewed regularly. What you share is confidential except where safety is at risk.
