Overview

Refractive surgery corrects short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism by reshaping the cornea with a laser or by placing a lens inside the eye.

Who it may help

  • Adults over 18 with a stable glasses prescription
  • People who cannot or do not want to wear glasses or contact lenses
  • People with healthy corneas of adequate thickness

Before the surgery

A detailed eye examination checks suitability. Contact lenses must be stopped for a time before assessment.

During and after the surgery

Laser surgery takes a few minutes per eye under numbing drops. Vision often improves within a day or two, with eye drops for several weeks.

Risks

Risks include dry eyes, glare and haloes, under- or over-correction and, rarely, infection.
