Overview

Retinal surgery is used to reattach a detached retina, remove blood or scar tissue from inside the eye and treat holes in the macula.

Why it is done

  • Retinal detachment
  • Bleeding inside the eye from diabetic retinopathy
  • Macular holes and membranes
  • Severe eye injuries or infections

Before the surgery

An eye specialist examines the retina and may use scans. Retinal detachment needs urgent surgery.

During and after the surgery

Surgery is done under local or general anaesthesia. A gas bubble may be placed in the eye, requiring special head positioning for days afterwards.

Risks

Risks include raised eye pressure, cataract, infection and the retina detaching again.

At KIH

Our team can guide you urgently to a retina specialist. Seek emergency care for sudden floaters, flashes or a shadow in your vision.
