Overview

SLT is a quick, outpatient laser procedure for open-angle glaucoma. It can be used as a first treatment or to reduce the number of eye drops needed.

Why it is done

  • Open-angle glaucoma
  • High eye pressure
  • People who have trouble using eye drops or have side effects from them

Before the procedure

Your eye specialist checks eye pressure and the drainage angle. Pressure-lowering drops may be given before treatment.

During the procedure

Numbing drops are used and a special lens is placed on the eye. The laser treatment takes a few minutes and is usually painless.

After the procedure

Mild discomfort or blurred vision may last a few hours. Eye pressure is checked over the following weeks.

Risks

Risks include a temporary rise in eye pressure, inflammation and the effect wearing off over time.
