Overview
The skull base supports the brain and contains important nerves and blood vessels. Surgery here is complex and often done through the nose using endoscopes, or through carefully planned openings in the skull.
Why it is done
- Pituitary tumours
- Meningiomas and acoustic neuromas
- Leaks of brain fluid through the nose
- Some tumours of the nose and sinuses
Before the surgery
Assessment includes MRI and CT scans, hormone and vision tests and planning by neurosurgeons and ENT surgeons.
During and after the surgery
Surgery is done under general anaesthesia. Recovery includes monitoring in hospital and follow-up scans.
Risks
Risks include brain fluid leak, infection, bleeding, hormone problems, nerve injury and vision changes.
At KIH
KIH's neurosurgery and ENT teams can assess skull base conditions and arrange specialised surgery when needed.
