Overview
Thyroid surgery treats thyroid cancer, large goitres, suspicious nodules and some cases of overactive thyroid.
Why it is done
- Thyroid cancer or suspicious nodules
- A large goitre causing pressure or breathing difficulty
- An overactive thyroid not controlled by other treatments
Before the surgery
Tests include thyroid blood tests, ultrasound, fine needle biopsy and a check of the vocal cords.
During and after the surgery
Surgery is done under general anaesthesia through a small cut in the neck. Most people go home within one to two days. Thyroid hormone tablets may be needed for life.
Risks
Risks include bleeding, voice changes from nerve injury and low calcium levels.
At KIH
