Overview

Total body irradiation is used to destroy cancer cells and suppress the immune system so that transplanted stem cells can grow. It is usually combined with chemotherapy.

Why it is done

  • Before stem cell transplant for leukaemia or lymphoma
  • For some other blood and bone marrow disorders

Before treatment

Careful planning measures the dose to the whole body. Shields may protect the lungs and other organs.

During treatment

Treatment is usually given in a few sessions over several days, sometimes twice a day. It is painless.

Risks

Side effects include nausea, tiredness, low blood counts, infection risk, mouth soreness and long-term effects on fertility, growth and other organs.

At KIH

KIH's haematology and oncology team can assess your needs and guide you to a transplant centre offering total body irradiation.
