Overview
VMAT shapes and adjusts the radiation beam continuously as the machine moves in an arc. This allows precise treatment in a shorter time than older techniques.
Why it is done
- Head and neck, prostate, brain and pelvic cancers
- Tumours close to sensitive organs
Before treatment
A planning CT scan is done in the treatment position, sometimes with a mask or mould.
During treatment
Sessions take only a few minutes and are painless. Treatment is usually daily on weekdays for several weeks.
Risks
Side effects depend on the area treated and may include tiredness, skin changes and irritation of nearby organs.
At KIH
KIH's oncology team can plan your cancer care and guide you to a centre offering VMAT.
